Let There Be Light

There is nothing more evocative of warmth and home than the glow of candles on the mantle or dining table, or the welcoming light of a hurricane lamp on a sideboard or window sill.

Despite their low brightness, candles have immense power for setting a mood after the sun sets. Not surprisingly, some of our favorite candle holders are crafted in well-known cold climates--New England and Scandinavia--or have historic legacies from Europe. We’ll shed some light on three.

Simon Pearce, Vermont

Simon Pearce makes beautiful candleware, but the hurricane lamps are especially appropriate this time of year, whether you live in an Arizona condo or a house on the wintry prairie. The glass lamp surrounding the candle protects the flame from drafts, intensifying the light and increasing the illumination.

We like the three classic designs: Hartland, Revere, and Nantucket. Placed on a mantle or entry hall table, these hurricane lamps make an impression--welcome to our home. In the warm weather, welcome to our patio.

Orrefors, Sweden

Orrefors votives and tea lights are stellar when mixed with other shapes and elegant on their own. Nothing could be more flexible than the Puck and Ice Cube collections. For a natural look, intersperse these crystal clear lights between evergreen or floral arrangements on the mantel or table, or nestle them within a mix of other decorations arranged on a tray or wood board.

The Discus collection, particularly the gold version, is the star of the show. Glowing and radiant because of the refractive metal-colored layer applied inside the base, these votives look terrific spaced out on a table or sideboard, especially when complemented with a Chilewich Metallic Lace runner or placemat.

Match Pewter, Italy

Match Pewter candlestick holders are in a class of their own. Modeled on European designs from the 14th to 18th centuries, these candelabras, candlesticks, pillar candle bases, and tea light holders complement both traditional and contemporary decors wherever they are placed. When paired with Match dinnerware or combined with other lines, these hand-crafted metal pieces signify substance and longevity. We love them.
